Blocked drains rarely happen without warning. In most cases, your plumbing gives you clear signals well before a full blockage occurs. The problem is, most homeowners don't know what to look for — or they ignore the early signs hoping the problem goes away on its own.
It usually doesn't. And by the time water is backing up out of your sink or shower, you've got a much bigger (and more expensive) job on your hands.
Here are the five warning signs we see most commonly before a drain fully blocks — and what to do if you spot them.
Slow Draining Water
If water is taking longer than usual to drain from your sink, shower, or bathtub, there's a partial blockage building up somewhere in the pipe. Hair, soap scum, grease and food scraps are the most common culprits. Don't wait — slow draining is the earliest and easiest sign to catch.
Gurgling Sounds from Pipes or Drains
That gurgling noise when you flush the toilet or empty the sink isn't just annoying — it's your drainage system telling you air is being trapped by a partial obstruction. If multiple fixtures are gurgling at the same time, the blockage is likely in your main sewer line.
Unpleasant Smells Coming from Drains
A bad smell — think rotten eggs or sewage — coming from your drains is a strong sign that organic material has built up and is decomposing inside your pipes. This is especially common in kitchen sinks where food waste and grease accumulate over time.
Water Pooling Around Floor Drains
If you notice water pooling around your laundry floor drain, bathroom floor, or outside drain grates — especially after rain — it's a sign the drain can't handle the volume of water. This is often caused by root intrusion, silt buildup, or collapsed pipe sections in older properties.
Multiple Fixtures Backing Up at Once
When more than one fixture is having problems simultaneously — say, the toilet bubbles when you run the washing machine — you almost certainly have a blockage in the main drain line. This is the most serious sign and requires immediate attention from a licensed plumber.
What Causes Blocked Drains in Brisbane Homes?
Brisbane's subtropical climate and older housing stock create some specific drain challenges. The most common causes we deal with are:
- Tree root intrusion — roots from trees and shrubs (especially older fig and jacaranda trees common in inner Brisbane) seek out moisture and can crack and penetrate clay pipes
- Grease and fat buildup — cooking oil poured down the sink solidifies in cooler pipe sections
- Hair and soap scum — the most common cause in bathrooms
- Foreign objects — wet wipes, cotton pads and paper towels are not drain-friendly, despite what some packaging claims
- Broken or collapsed pipes — common in homes built before the 1980s with terracotta or clay pipes
What to Do If You Spot These Signs
If you've noticed one or more of the warning signs above, the best thing you can do is act early. A partial blockage is much faster and cheaper to clear than a full one.
Avoid using supermarket drain cleaners as a fix — most contain caustic chemicals that can damage older pipes and rarely solve the underlying problem. They may temporarily move the blockage further down the line, making it harder to clear properly.
Pro tip: A professional CCTV drain inspection is the only way to know exactly what's causing your drain problem and where. It takes about 15 minutes and means we fix the right thing, first time.
At Your Local Plumbing Co, we use CCTV inspection cameras and high-pressure water jetting to clear blockages completely — not just temporarily. We can be at your Brisbane property same day in most cases.
